When I look back at how I built my book of business when I was a producer, three things made the biggest difference.
- I built a personal brand around what I felt I did best.
- I got crystal clear on who my ideal client was.
- Then I built a sales message around a framework I’d created, a way of teaching people to solve the exact problem I was best positioned to solve.
And when I started amplifying that through email, speaking, social media, and podcasting, the right people started raising their hand.
Here’s the question you need to sit with: What makes you different?
If you don’t have a clear answer, your sales conversations are going to feel like a grind every time.
A mentor once told me the number one goal when prospecting wasn’t to get a yes. It was to get a reply. And when I did land an appointment, my job wasn’t to sell something. It was to help the buyer make a clear decision. Those two shifts changed everything.
Here’s something else I share with producers we work with today.
When you walk into a prospect’s office, you already know three things: they have insurance, they have a broker, and there’s an 80% chance they actually like that broker. So why not say that out loud? It knocks the walls down and builds trust faster than any pitch ever will.
Detaching from the outcome doesn’t mean you stop caring. It means your self-worth isn’t riding on whether someone says yes today. The version of me that started winning was fine saying, “I don’t think this is a good fit right now.” That confidence comes from knowing your brand, knowing your ideal client, and having a message that means something.
ACTION STEPS:
Audit your brand: Can you articulate what you do better than anyone else in your market? If not, it needs work.
Define your ideal client: Get specific about who you do your best work for, and who is not a fit.
Shift your prospecting goal: Stop chasing yeses. Start chasing replies. The yeses come when you’re talking to the right people.

Business is no longer about who you know. Business is about who knows you. In a noisy industry like we’re in gang, you got to get people to know who you are.
