How I Design My Life for Business Success (Even on the Road)

Watching insurance professionals work their tails off to build a solid routine at home, then completely abandon it the moment they travel for business drives me crazy.

They eat garbage. Skip workouts. Feel sluggish during the most important meetings of their quarter.

Then they wonder why their performance drops when they’re away from home.

Last month, Amy and I did a three-day tour (Chicago, New Jersey, back to Chicago). Monday through Wednesday. Three cities, multiple meetings, one speaking engagement.

By Wednesday night, I felt just as sharp as I did Monday morning.

Here’s how.

It’s All in the Preparation

Even before I pack my clothes, I prep my supplements and protein powders. I make what I call my “road warrior snack bag”: protein powder, almond butter packets, beef jerky, and almonds.

I also prep my morning drink mix. The same electrolyte and creatine combo I use at home. Just because I’m in a hotel doesn’t mean my brain gets less fuel.

Your prospects and clients deserve the same version of you whether you’re in your home office or a conference room in another state.

Location Scouting Changes Everything

When I’m looking at hotels, I’m not just checking reviews and amenities. I’m looking for one thing: Is there a Whole Foods nearby?

Why Whole Foods? Because I know exactly what I’m getting. Same ingredients, same quality, no guesswork.

When there’s no Whole Foods, we spend time researching healthy restaurants in the area. Breakfast, lunch, dinner options. All mapped out before we land.

I see too many producers who have solid routines at home, then hit the road and eat like they’re on vacation. That’s not business travel, that’s self-sabotage.

The Gym Strategy

Hotel gyms are hit or miss. Some don’t even exist.

So before every trip, I research gyms within a 5-10 mile radius of the hotel. Most offer free day passes or charge very little. Planet Fitness? Free day pass. Local CrossFit boxes? Usually under $20.

But here’s the thing: I’m not doing this because I’m obsessed with fitness. I’m doing it because there’s only one reason I’m on the road, to perform.

Whether I’m running a workshop or speaking to a group of 500 insurance professionals, I need to be alert and on my game.

Why This Matters for Your Book of Business

When you travel for business, you’re usually meeting your most important prospects and clients. The referral sources who could change your year.

These meetings matter more than your Tuesday afternoon appointment back home.

So why would you show up operating at 70% because you ate airport food for three days and skipped every workout?

Your competition isn’t just the consultant across town anymore. It’s the one who shows up sharp, energized, and consistent regardless of where they are.

The Simple System

You don’t need to copy my approach. But you do need a system.

Before your next business trip, ask yourself:

Where will I eat healthy meals? (Research this before you book the hotel)

Where will I work out? (Find gyms nearby and have a backup plan)

What will I pack to stay consistent with my routine? (Supplements, snacks, whatever keeps you sharp)

The goal isn’t perfection. It’s consistency.

Because your biggest opportunities often happen when you’re away from home.

What’s one thing you can prep this week to make your next business trip more successful?
