The Trait That Separates Good Insurance Producers from Great Ones

Ask ten sales leaders what makes a top producer and you’ll get ten different answers.

Closing skills. Product knowledge. Work ethic. All of those matter, but none of them top the list.

The answer is awareness.

Awareness means you can read a room.

You pick up on what a prospect is actually worried about, not just what they’re saying.

You put yourself in their shoes before presenting ideas.

In insurance sales especially, that skill is everything, because our industry is technically demanding in a way few others are.

You Need to Tell Time AND Know How the Watch Was Built

Some producers are great storytellers. They pull you in, make you feel something, and earn your attention.

Others are technical experts who know every detail of how a policy works and can explain it cold.

Insurance sales requires both.

A prospect needs a compelling story to get interested. Telling them the watch tells time is what gets them leaning in.

Showing them how the watch was built is what earns their trust.

One without the other leaves something on the table.

Awareness is what helps you know which one your prospect needs in any given moment.

The Three Things Every Producer Should Do Every Week

Awareness also shows up in how you structure your time.

Producers who stay organized, who prioritize their days, who don’t just react, those are the ones who build consistency.

Consistency is what’s missing in a lot of insurance careers right now.

If you’re a producer, three activities should anchor every single week:

  • Reach out to people who don’t know you yet. Calls, emails, drop-ins, whatever your style. This activity never stops.
  • Stay in touch with people who already like you and can send you business. Referral relationships take maintenance.
  • Work on getting more people to know who you are. Content, brand, visibility, whatever you’re building.

Too many producers get so focused on brand-building that the other activities slip.

If Referrals Are Driving Your Business, Don’t Apologize for It

A lot of producers who are thriving on referrals and inbound leads feel like they should be doing more.

They compare themselves to people posting content every day and wonder if they’re falling behind.

They’re not.

If your book of business is growing through relationships and referrals, you’ve built something real.

Credibility is what drives insurance sales today, and referrals are proof you have it.

Keep doing what’s working. And no matter how you’re growing, just be human.

People respect honesty, and in this industry, that goes a long way.
