What advice would you give your 21 year old self? In this video, I’m going to give you some of the best sales advice I could ever give you. And it actually has nothing to do with sales. If you’re struggling right now to hit your sales goals has nothing to do with your skill, has nothing to do with your knowledge of your product, has everything to do with what’s going on between the ears.

Your self-talk. A few weeks ago, my sister was cleaning out her house. She came upon this photo. This is the 21 year old version of me playing professional baseball in the Milwaukee Brewers organization. This kid was scared. He was afraid to put himself out there for to take risks. He lived his entire life in fear. Fear of comparison, fear of judgment, but most importantly, a fear of failure.

And he tied his self-worth to his own success. If he had a great game on the mound, his self-worth was off the charts. If you gave up a bunch of runs and a few home runs, it was a failure in his own eyes. So when I look at that 21 year old version myself and ask myself if I could go back in time and put my arm around this kid, what advice would I give them?

Here’s what I’d say, and I bet you it’s good advice for you. Take some risks. You have a long life ahead of you. If you fail, who cares? You have plenty of time to recover. Quit living your life through other’s opinions. Quit caring what other people think. Just do you. And self-worth has nothing to do with the results you create.

You are not your results. You see, these words of wisdom are so impactful when it comes to your sales. Right now, your struggle ing to hit and achieve some goals you have set for yourself. But the reason you’re not hitting them is because of what you’re saying to yourself. Number one, you’re afraid to put yourself out there and grab attention from your prospects.

Why? Because you’re too afraid. What other people are going to do or what they’re going to say. You’re too afraid to trace something new. Try a new marketing strategy. Why? Because you don’t want to fail. You’re living your life through the opinions of others. You’re letting other peers tell you this is how you do it. This is how you should dress.

This is who you should be. And most importantly, you’re tying your self-worth to your current sales results. When the pipeline is full, AOL hours are coming in. You feel good. Yet when you look at that pipeline and it’s empty. Confidence is low. And your vision, your belief in who you are, is low. And I’m here to tell you, that is why you’re not having success.

So as we head into 2024, if you want to blow through your sales goals next year, I’m going to be here to tell you it has nothing to do with your knowledge. It has nothing to do with your skill or even the products you offer. It is your self-talk. Let me give you that advice one more time that I would give the 21 year old version of myself.

Take risks. Put yourself out there next year. Let your prospects see you. Stop worrying about what others think. Stop living your sales career through others opinions. Just do you. But most important, your results are not a a a metric of who you are. They are not tied to your self-worth. If you’re having a terrible sales month, it doesn’t mean you’re a bad person.

And if you’re having an amazing sales month, it doesn’t mean you’re a great person. If you just go at your business plan next year with these three pieces of advice in mind, you are going to have the best year you have ever had. Man, I look back at this 21 year old version of myself, and if I had lived life that way, who knows how far I would gone? I want to help you do the same.

Business is no longer about who you know. Business is about who knows you. In a noisy industry like we’re in gang, you got to get people to know who you are.
